The Church Going Viral
Kevin Hendricks over at Church Marketing Sucks has a great article about the recent flash mob video from Second Baptist Church, “Dance Your Shoes Off”. He makes some great points what a viral video like this which involved so many people can do, including:
“Such a public event does have the benefit of multiple perspectives. It’s not limited to the official video. Loads of people watching the event can be seen snapping pictures and taking cell phone video. These alternate perspectives show up online, spreading the core idea even further.”

What do you think about the church trying to produce viral videos?
I have mixed feelings about it. I appreciate the creativity and fun that's involved in the video. The practical side of me wonders though, what impact these 2,000 people could have had if they had spent all those hours serving the people of Houston – feeding the homeless, visiting people in nursing homes, or helping to fix up the homes of people unable to do so for themselves? But would video of 2,000 people serving their community go viral?
Good point Paul. Considering how much time and money probably went into planning and practicing, I'd guess that that many hours times 2000+ people could do some pretty amazing service for the Houston area. Done right, I could see a video about that service and it's effects going viral. Shoot, with that many people, you could probably get a couple videos out of it.
Beyond that, however, is another question. Even if you didn't get a viral video out of the service, is having created a viral video worth more than the good they could have done by serving the people in Houston and the witness for Christ they could have been in a personal way for hundreds or thousands of people.
I'm not trying to come down on them for the video, but you comment certainly raises some good questions.
Here's the solution… do it all. Do flash mobs, go feed the homeless, help fix up homes, visit people in nursing homes and hospitals… do it all!
I agree with Adrienne. Also, remember, everything has it's purpose. Those things that Paul mentioned are great. There are so many different kinds of people on this earth and surprisingly some are reached more effectively by music, dance and other social media ways. It was mentioned that many received free shoes, so there was an extension of giving materially also. Let's stay creative, open, doing things out of the box! The world expects us to do the hospital, nursing homes, witness and that's all good. We can kept it interesting and do unexpected stuff as well!! Let's go Body of Christ!
